Cabaret

The original 1966 Broadway production of Kander & Ebb’s show quickly became a hit and was made into the iconic film of 1972 starring Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles, a performer at the Berlin cabaret The Kit Kat Club, and her relationship with American writer Cliff Bradshaw, during the rise of the Nazi’s during the 1930s.

With a sub-plot surrounding star-crossed lovers Frauline Schneider, a German boarding house owner, and Herr Shultz, a Jewish fruit vendor, events in the show are overseen by the charasmatic Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Club.

The show is based on a 1951 play by John Van Druten called “I Am a Camera”, which in turn was based on a short novel by Christopher Isherwood, “Goodbye to Berlin” (1939).

There have been numerous revivals on Broadway and in the West End, and many productions around the world since the original production, including a BBC Radio production in 1996. It has also become very popular with amateur dramatic groups.
